We got a revised cost estimate from our builder (Nunn). Their review of our initial concept design generated some savings from the initial architect estimate, which allows us some more flexibility in what we can build.
Given the increasing complexity and detail we need to consider in moving to the next level of design, the Building Engagement Task Force (BETF) has started meeting twice a week. We will bring a new set of conceptual designs to the congregation for review and discussion at our next BETF Town Hall after Sunday Service on July 26. We will also provide a brief review of our process so far and update the revised design and building schedule, which you can preview here: There are still some tricky siting and and siting-linked design issues that we must resolve, but we expect to be able to bring more detailed plans and elevations to the following Town Hall on August 9. We are increasingly encouraged that we can design a building we can afford, be proud of, and use well to serve our mission, while working within the $3.3mm budget we currently have pledged or otherwise available.
We also had a productive meeting with city officials regarding our potential use of the “playground/park” adjacent to our property. The process for leasing at least a part of that lot to use for additional parking and storage sheds is now underway. We will continue to engage with city officials to work through what needs to be done to get a favorable ruling from the City Council.
The BETF recently submitted a grant application (Federal money funneled through state agencies) for security improvements on the campus. The grant asks for nearly $200,000 to support hardening the campus in multiple ways, including potential security costs associated with the new construction, Bowman and Columbine included.
As a result our recent change in congregational leadership, the BETF has also shifted some responsibilities. Sherrod Beall, now UUFD Board President is backing off her co-chair role but will remain a member of the Task Force. Tom Miller will continue as BETF co-lead along with Allison Andersen. Mary Ocken, Barbara Hahn and Deborah Lycan continue as task force members. You can contact any of them if you have questions or comments about the building discernment process
